Sunshine Meadows Hike

I was going to do my own write-up of our first full-day hike in the Canadian Rockies, but Andrew beat me to it, so here’s his write-up. I do however have some narrative included in my photo album for the hike, which can be viewed over on Flickr.

Wildlife Sightings so far in Banff

While we’re generally glad we haven’t ran into any Grizzlies in a bad way, we were really were hoping to see one from a safe distance on our Sunshine Meadows hike on Friday. Alas, no luck. Catching the first shuttle bus in the am may have helped our chances, but I’m still not a morning person.

What we did find was this absolutely adorable little weasel:

…and many a ground squirrel. We also saw a group of 3 larger fauna up in a very high clearing near the crest of a ridge, but I couldn’t ID which type – deer, elk, pronghorn etc. they were with bare eyes.

Then this evening a coyote was trapsingly along the grassy edge of the opposite side of the road as we left the Banff Hot Springs. Luckily I spied him before he got too close. As I slowed down he moved into the opposite lane – seemed like he might be checking a smashed bit of something in the road out. I put on my hazards and slowed to a near stop, even though I was quite close he still wasn’t moving off the road so I hollered at him a bit to convince him he really should be moving on. He scampered to the edge of the road at that point, but kept trotting in our direction of travel just the same. I’ve had other wild animals do this before, they seem to have an instinct to follow along, not sure if they’re chasing or joining? It’s a neat feeling, but probably not the best habit for them to be in for their own self-preservation. Hope the drivers leaving town after me kept an eye out for this little guy!

Hopefully more wildlife encounters to report in the future…

Having taken nearly 10,000 photos over the past few months, I am waaay behind on going through and picking out the best of (usually 50%, I don’t go too crazy but at least like the cut the total duplicates), and then posting online. I just finally got through the photos from the great, epic (for us) hike we did on my birthday to Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park. You can view them here on Flickr.

Went to Rainier this week, sooooooo cool. Just wow. We only did one long hike, plus a nature walk, but both were very beautiful. #
Been back in Bellevue the last few days, finally made it to the gigantic REI today, wow, that's a big (and busy on a sale wkd) place! #

Been taking in easy in Seattle area for a bit since I've not feeling well (back probs + ulcer from bacteria + taking antibiotics for that) #
Got in to see some good docs, have to hang around the city more than I wanted to for PT, but got down to the Museum of Glass today in Tacoma #
Very cool place, we stayed awhile in the studio where you can watch artists making a piece of glass art with some interpretation #

FAA confirming/claiming cause of explosion noise in Seattle was aircraft sonic boom http://www.king5.com/ #

waited probably close to an hour for ice cream at Maggie Moon's! Mint was good, chocolate was weird, cream consistency very good. #

Record temps again today-95 degrees.We've got the apt closed up trying to keep the heat out.It's only kinda working, think it's 88 inside:( #
survived the heat! now have to finish packing up in muggy, but bearable evening. Did a heavy duty unpack and clean of the car, purging a bit #
